It is well documented: new maritime software solutions technology can power up operations, streamline processes, reduce costs, and increase revenue when implemented correctly.  That is the reason modern shipping companies, freight forwarders, and port operators allocate significant portions of their budgets on technology and systems improvement. With this comes the increasing number of shipping software companies offering a wide range of solutions for various clients and vessel types such as break bulk carriers, roll-on/roll-off  (RoRo), general cargo, container vessels, multi-purpose (MPP) vessels, and third party logistics providers (3PL’s).

However, with most shipping companies, software implementation has always been a top concern, particularly when it comes to making sure that new solutions seamlessly work with existing shipping technologies and processes. To be specific, existing policies, practices, facilities, and staff support must be carefully considered when implementing new shipping software solutions in order to mitigate risks and maximize functionality.

Here are a couple of ideas you may consider when incorporating liner shipping software with your existing operations:

1.       Review and document current business processes, and identify ways that the new software can streamline operations. This can help you maximize your investment and avoid spending your budget on shipping solutions software that do not serve your shipping requirements.

2.       Based on your findings, design your shipping process using the new software. Many packaged shipping line software solutions can be modified to work on older shipping platforms without the need for expensive reprogramming.

3.       When necessary, reengineer existing shipping processes to match the capabilities and requirements of new software. Bear in mind the timeless advice of not “sewing a new piece of cloth on an old garment” or “putting new wine into old wineskins”.

4.       Plan implementation timing. If possible, do not schedule implementation of new integrated shipping software during peak season. Doing so may have undesirable effects on an otherwise profitable time for business.
